THIS SPEECH WAS COMPILED AND PRESENTED BY MY DAUGHTER Elisha

Before I start, I would like to open this speech with a verse and a prayer. Psalm 121:8 says, “The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”

Let us pray:
Heavenly Father, we thank you for the many years of dedication, service, friendships, and memories that have been shared. Thank you for guiding my dad’s steps throughout his career and for blessing him with colleagues who became family. As he enters this new season of rest and purpose, we ask that you grant him peace, good health, and continued joy. Please bless everyone gathered here today and continue to guide their paths. Amen.

Good day everyone. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Elisha, and it is an honour to stand here on behalf of my dad Shane.

Being here today, standing in a room filled with people who have worked alongside my dad, who have shared stories, challenges, successes with him, makes this moment incredibly meaningful. It’s amazing to see so many faces who have been part of his journey, and it really brings home just how much of an impact he has made over the years.

This was originally going to be a 37-page farewell message, but after some serious editing, and knowing my dad isn’t one for long speeches, we managed to cut it down to something that might only take about an hour. Every word, however, reflects the admiration, gratitude, and respect we feel, not just for the professional he has been, but for the person who has touched so many lives through his kindness, dedication, and humour.

I have the honour of standing here today as my dad’s daughter, speaking on his behalf, as he marks the end of an incredible 35-year journey.

He decided it’s my turn to do the talking while he enjoys the moment. It’s a privilege to represent him in this way, and I hope to capture even a small part of the love, effort, and joy he has given to his work and to all of you throughout the years. Every sentence has been carefully chosen to reflect his journey, his values, and the many ways he has made a difference, both professionally and personally.

My dad has worked for the City of Cape Town for 35 years, a journey that began in 1990 at Gallows Hill Traffic, back when Chief Le Roux was still a traffic officer on a motorcycle. According to my dad, he was the neatest officer he had ever known, someone he admired greatly. My dad was later asked to join the Metro Police, and from there, many lifelong connections were formed.

My parents raised me to respect the people who helped shape who you become, and that brings me to a few very special individuals my dad wanted to acknowledge.

Uncle Le Roux:

Uncle Le Roux represents more than just a colleague in my dad’s story, he represents a foundation. In the early days of my dad’s career, Uncle Le Roux set an example of discipline, professionalism, and pride in the work. Watching how he carried himself left a lasting impression and helped shape the standards my dad would carry throughout his own career.

Those early years mattered, and being surrounded by strong role models made all the difference. For the influence he had, the example he set, and the role he played during those formative years, my dad remains deeply grateful.

Aunty Schoeman:

Aunty Schoeman was always a shining source of positivity and encouragement. She had a way of motivating others to grow and improve, and she never failed to lift the spirits of those around her. During difficult times, she offered unwavering support, reminding my dad that even the toughest seasons eventually pass, a comfort that meant more to him than she may ever realize. He holds a very special place in his heart for her.

Aunty Bronwyn:

Now this one is special, and a little difficult. From the very first day she started about three years ago, my dad says they clicked like a house on fire. She has the kind of personality that walks into a room and immediately brightens it. Always smiling, always positive, and deeply passionate about her work. She is approachable, inspiring, and in my dad’s words, one of the best managers anyone could ever ask for. He would follow her to the ends of the earth.

Uncle Andre:

And then there’s Uncle Andre, and yes, this is a true story… really, a true story. Over the years, my dad has formed a special friendship with Uncle Andre. He was always there with advice, sometimes personal, sometimes work-related, and my dad is deeply grateful for that.

And of course, there’s “the pit”, a place my dad enjoys attending at end-of-year functions. It’s more than just a spot at a gathering; it’s where colleagues come together, share laughter, and remember that work is also about connection. And if you know Uncle Andre, you know he doesn’t just attend, he entertains. His jokes, sometimes witty, sometimes groan-worthy, always land just when they’re needed most, turning ordinary moments into memories people laugh about long after.

And finally, saving the best for last, Aunty Jessica.
Also known as my dad’s work wife, or as he lovingly calls her, “my bokkie.” My dad has worked alongside you since the day you started at Metro Police, right there in the same office you are both in again today. He thanks you for the constant support, guidance, and friendship throughout the years. He especially thanks you for being a light during important moments, including my matric farewell, which he still speaks about proudly. You could always confide in one another, always support one another, and he will truly miss the lunches the three of you shared together.

My mom would be up here too, but she’s currently mentally preparing the to-do list for my dad. So honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if he shows up at work again just looking for an escape.

Before I end, I’d like to hand over to the man of the hour my dad.

, because while he may have retired from the job, he hasn’t retired from having something to say.

I would like to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for being a pain in my butt for the past 35 years, but I love you all. To those not mentioned by name, the Deputy Chiefs, Directors, and all staff, thank you. I would have loved to thank each and every one of you personally, but unfortunately, that would mean I’d be standing here for another year.

Lastly, please do me a favour and visit my website at www.3darrows.co.za Thank you, Andre for the site name.

And keep a close eye on the website, because there will be a book coming…and yes, it’s about all of you.

Chief
Wayne Le Roux

Chief, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for everything you've done for me throughout the years. Your guidance has meant more to me than I can truly put into words. The advice you've shared with me has been invaluable, and I’ve often found myself reflecting on the lessons you’ve imparted. You've always had a way of offering wisdom that felt practical, thoughtful, and genuine, and it’s made a huge difference in how I approach both my work and life.

There were many times when I took your advice to heart and saw the positive impact it had, and for that, I am truly thankful. One of the things you encouraged me to do was to stay on a bit longer, and while I truly wanted to, the circumstances around me made it impossible. Despite that, I’ll always carry your advice with me as I move forward in this new chapter of my life.

But beyond the professional guidance, I want to especially thank you for the friendship we’ve built over the years. It’s something I treasure deeply, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the chance to work alongside you and learn from you. You've not only been a leader but also a mentor and a friend, and I will always be grateful for that connection.

Your family is just as remarkable as you are. Nicole and Darren are two wonderful young adults, and I know you must be incredibly proud of everything they’ve accomplished. It’s clear that you’ve raised them with the same care and wisdom that you've shown in your work. And then there’s Gaye – a truly talented artist, whose creativity and passion shine through in everything she does. You’ve built a beautiful family, and it’s evident in everything they do and how they carry themselves.

As I move on to the next chapter of my life, I want you to know how much I’ve appreciated your leadership, friendship, and the positive impact you’ve had on me. I wish you all the best in the future, Chief.

Thank you again for everything, and I’ll always be grateful for the time we’ve spent working together.

Adios amigo, adios my friend
The road we have traveled has come to an end
When two love the same love, one love has to lose
And it's you who she longs for; it's you she will choose

Adios compadre, what must be must be
Remember to name one muchacho for me
I ride to the Rio, where my life I will spend
Adios amigo, adios my friend

Adios compadre, let us shed no tears
May all your mananas bring joy through the years
Away from these memories, my life I must spend
Adios amigo, adios my friend

MS RONÉL SCHOEMAN

Ms. Schoeman, it feels like a lifetime ago when I first joined the Metro Police, back in the days when everything was still new and uncertain. Over the years, you’ve been more than just a colleague to me, you were a mentor, a guide, and, in the darkest times of my life, a steady light.

I’ll never forget how you always took the time to listen when the weight of the world seemed too heavy. When my wife was diagnosed with cancer and my father passed away on the same day, I thought I had lost everything. But through it all, you were there, offering kind words, unwavering support, and a comforting presence when I thought I could not go on.

The journey we’ve walked together over these years, the hours spent side by side, will forever be etched in my heart. You were not just a mentor; you helped shape who I am today. I will always cherish the training you sent me on, the wisdom you imparted, and the invaluable experience I gained under your guidance.

I will miss our morning chats more than I can say the easy camaraderie that made even the toughest days bearable. Yet, as much as I will miss you, I am forever grateful. Grateful for your kindness, your strength, and for being the incredible person that you are.

No matter where life takes us, know that you can always count on me. If ever you need assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out, I will be there for you, just as you were for me.

Thank you, Ms. Schoeman, for being a constant source of inspiration. You’ve left an imprint on my life, and I will carry the lessons and memories with me always.

BRONWYN Jacobs

Bronwyn, I just want to take a moment to let you know how incredibly special you are. From the very first day you walked into Metro Police, I could see it, you have this amazing warmth and understanding about you that lights up everything around you. You're one of those rare people who makes everyone feel seen and heard, and the world would truly be a better place if there were more people like you in it.

You have this natural ability to make everything brighter just by being there. Every time you walk into a room, it's like the whole atmosphere lifts. You bring so much positivity, and your smile is like a ray of sunshine. It's impossible not to feel better when you're around.

But what really stands out to me, beyond your friendly spirit, is your genuine kindness and willingness to help others. No matter what, you're always there for people, offering support without hesitation. It’s truly a gift, and it speaks to the heart of who you are.

I really hope one day you chase all those dreams you have, because I believe in you so much. Whatever path you choose, I know you're going to make it work, you've got that magic about you. You’ve already accomplished so much, and this is just the beginning.

I'm so grateful that God crossed our paths. You've touched my life in ways I can't fully express, and I just want you to know that I'm always here for you. You’ve got a friend for life, no matter what. So, whenever you need me, just remember I'm only one call away. I'll be there to save the day. Superman got nothing on me. I'm only one call away.

Keep being exactly who you are, because you’re absolutely incredible. I see nothing but greatness ahead for you, Bronwyn. Keep shining, always.

JESSICA DE KOKER

To my Besty, Jessica De Koker, it’s hard to put into words just how much you’ve meant to me. Not only have you been an incredible Beverage Manager, but you’ve also been my rock, my work wife, looking out for me, making sure I’m okay, and always offering that constant kindness you bring into every moment. You have this incredible way of caring for people, always ready to lend a hand, no matter what.

Over the years, we’ve shared so much together, confiding in each other, offering advice, and being each other’s support when things got tough. That connection has been so deep, and honestly, I can’t imagine my days without you by my side. You’ve been so much more than a colleague; you’ve been a true friend and an irreplaceable part of my life.

I already know everything’s going to feel so different without you around. I’m going to miss you more than words can even capture. It’s going to be hard, but I want you to know just how truly special you are to me.

Thank you for being you, for all the love, laughter, and support you’ve brought into my life.

Here’s to all the memories we’ve created and the ones still ahead. You’ll always have a place in my heart.

With all my love and gratitude,

Thembinkosi Mcenge - Nkosi My Handyman

Hey Nkosi,

As I prepare for early retirement, I find myself feeling a mix of gratitude and sadness, and I couldn’t leave without taking a moment to thank you properly. This chapter closing is harder than I expected, and a big part of that is knowing I won’t be working alongside you every day anymore.

You’ve always gone above and beyond in everything you do. No matter the task, no matter the pressure, you showed up with commitment, kindness, and that unmistakable positive energy. Your willingness to help with absolutely anything, without hesitation, has been such a blessing, not just to the team, but to me personally. Your smile could lift even the heaviest days, and it’s something I’ll truly miss.

In all the years we’ve worked together, I’ve never once had reason to question your work ethic or the quality of your work. You’ve been consistently top-notch, dependable, and professional in every sense. It’s genuinely been an honour and a privilege to stand beside you, my friend.

I’m proud of you for pursuing your studies in a field you’re passionate about. It takes courage to chase a dream, and I have no doubt you’re going to excel. You’re built for success. And yes, when you’re fully qualified, I’ll be right there calling on you to take care of the electrical and plumbing at my house… preferably at a great price, or even better, for free! I had to sneak that in, just to make you smile.

But jokes aside, you’ve been so much more than just a colleague to me. You’ve become like a brother. We’ve shared countless moments over the years, good days, tough days, laughs, and long conversations and I’ve always admired your reliability and your heart. You were always there, always willing to lend a hand, and that’s something I’ll never forget. It’s hard to imagine this place without you around, and even harder to imagine my days without our chats. I’m really, truly going to miss you.

As I step into this new phase of life, I do so with deep appreciation for the people who made the journey meaningful, and you are very high on that list. I wish you nothing but success, happiness, and fulfilment in everything that lies ahead. When the day comes that you earn that qualification, know that I’ll be one of your biggest supporters, cheering you on from the sidelines.

Take care of yourself, Nkosi. Please know that you’ll always have a place in my thoughts and my heart. Thank you for everything, you’ve made a lasting impact on my life.

Cheers

Brendon Johannes, Warren Martin and Craig Losper the three musketeers

To Brendon, Warren, and Craig – The Three Musketeers,

What can I say about the Three Musketeers? Always willing to lend a hand and eager to learn something new. Not a single day went by that if I needed something done, I could count on one of you, or all three, to get it done, without hesitation.

Brendon, I want to thank you for always being there to assist me with whatever needed to be done. You were always ready with a smile and a laugh, and I truly appreciated your help throughout the years we worked together.

Craig and Warren, you two were always willing to collect or deliver any equipment or documents that needed to be handled, no questions asked. Even when the task wasn’t yours, you both jumped in without a second thought. Your support and teamwork meant so much to me.

I know that the Three Musketeers will continue to achieve great things, and I’m proud to have had the opportunity to work with and get to know all of you.

Farewell, my Monchhichis! I’ll never forget the memories and the help you’ve given me.

"One for all, and all for One"

AndrÉ Josias

No, this is a true story. Real, it’s a true story, Andre!

I can’t believe the time has come to bid farewell. It feels like just yesterday that you were working with my mom at the City of Cape Town and now look at us, partners in crime at work! Who would have thought? From mom to colleague and now, to friend. You’re truly a legend!

I have to say, I’ll really miss your Friday messages (assuming you don’t remove me from your WhatsApp group). They’ve become the highlight of my week, and I’m pretty sure they’ve turned into a mandatory read for anyone within a 50-meter radius. Seriously, you should consider a career as a motivational speaker, or at the very least, a stand-up comedian! Your words are not only packed with wisdom but often leave me laughing like I’ve just heard the punchline to a killer joke.

Over the years, I’ve come to treasure our growing relationship. You’ve been like a walking, talking fortune cookie: full of wisdom, guidance, and the occasional dad joke. Your ability to drop pearls of wisdom while making us laugh is a skill few possess, and you do it effortlessly. It's a rare gift, like finding a unicorn in a haystack.

The laughter we’ve shared has been priceless, and I honestly can't remember a dull moment with you around. I know I’ll miss the jokes, the banter, and of course, your legendary awesomeness. But hey, the pit club isn’t going anywhere, right? Keep that fire burning! I expect updates, and don’t forget to save me a seat (preferably near the bar—I’ll need a drink to drown my retirement sorrows).

Thank you for being such an amazing friend and an even better source of laughter. Your kindness, wisdom, and infectious sense of humor have made work feel less like, well, work! I’ll always be grateful for the time we spent together.

Now go ahead and keep making the world a better place, one laugh at a time!

With much gratitude and a (semi-heavy) heart (but not too heavy, I’m retiring!),

Nolubabalo Damane and Philasande Mgqandu

Nolubabalo and Philasande, well, it’s time for me to say goodbye as I head into retirement. First, let me say that I’ll miss the "Did You Know" moments, no more of those from me, haha!  But on a serious note, it has been such a pleasure working with you both over the years. Your warm smiles and friendly greetings always brightened up my day whenever I walked into the 6th floor.

You've both been incredibly helpful, and I’ve really enjoyed the little chats we shared. I’ll certainly miss those moments. I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to work with such wonderful people.

Nolubabalo, I wish you all the best with your little one. They are truly a precious gift, and I know you’ll be an amazing parent. Don’t forget to read lots of books to him, you can even find children’s books on my website. I’d be happy to offer them to you at a great price...LOL free for you.

I wish you both nothing but success and happiness in the future.

Good luck, and God bless!

Sometimes we have to step out of our comfort zone and take the bull by the horns. Chase what sets your soul on fire. It was always a pleasure chatting with you and listening to the passion you have for teaching dance. I have no doubt you will inspire many people along the way.

Tatum Pillay

Hey Tatum, my Choppy. It feels like forever, doesn't it? We go way back to the very start of Metro Police when it was still 1st City Police. So many years have passed since then, but I’ll always remember how you’ve been such a friend to me, always willing to lend a hand whenever you could.

Those days working together, from Paul Sauer to Harbour Place, and even 101 Hertzog Blvd, they were some of the best time we had. We shared a lot, didn’t we? Good laughs, hard work, and just being there for each other. I’ll always hold those memories close.

Take good care of yourself, Choppy. One day, we need to get the gang back together and hit up StarDust again, just like old times. We really did have some great moments there; those times will forever stay with me. God bless you, my friend. Always.

Kim Le-Ann

To all the staff, both uniformed and non-uniformed, thank you for making my experience with the Metro Police truly unforgettable. Every day spent with you was filled with learning, growth, and shared moments that I will cherish for years to come. It was a privilege to work with such a dedicated team.

Reflecting on my 35 years of service, I can honestly say that, while we faced our fair share of challenges, the highs far outweighed the lows. Not a single day was dull; each day presented new challenges and opportunities to grow, and I have learned so much. I am forever grateful for the memories and experiences we’ve shared together in the City of Cape Town.

May God bless each and every one of you. Every person I encountered during my time at Metro Police played a unique and vital role in shaping my journey, and I will always carry that with me.

And of course, don’t forget to check out my books! The Adventures of Johnny, Sergei and His Go-Kart, Nkosi and His Dog Duma, The Adventures of Starry Ant, and the soon-to-be-released SS Sentinel. Thank you all once again for everything.

I’ve had the pleasure of working closely with both of you, and I can honestly say that you’ve made a world of difference, especially with all the work that was made possible at 101. I know I’ve sometimes sounded like a broken record, bringing up repair and maintenance issues again and again. But through it all, Marisa and Mandla, you were always there, ready and willing to ensure everything was resolved promptly and efficiently.

Your support didn’t just make things run smoothly; it truly made our working environment so much more enjoyable. I really appreciate the professionalism and care you’ve shown in all our dealings.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to let everyone know that the air conditioners will be sorted out soon, so rest assured, things are moving forward on that front.
